When to lay turf in Newcastle

Turf can go down for much of the year. The season mainly changes how much watering it needs and how quickly it roots.

Spring and autumn

In the North East, spring and early autumn are the most forgiving seasons. The soil is moist and mild, rain does a lot of the watering for you and the grass roots steadily. Autumn is especially good because the ground is still warm from summer.

Summer

Turf laid in summer roots fast but needs plenty of water, as it can dry out within a day in hot weather. If you're away a lot or can't water daily, spring or autumn may suit you better.

Winter

Winter laying is possible when the ground isn't frozen or waterlogged. Growth is slow, so the lawn takes longer to knit together, but there's little watering to do. See our winter guide.

The best time is often when you're ready

If you're moving in, finishing building work or planning a summer in the garden, the right time is often the one that fits your plans. We'll tell you if the weather on your chosen date isn't suitable.

Questions people ask

Can turf be laid in the rain?

Light rain is fine and can even help. Heavy rain that turns the soil to mud isn't, because the ground gets compacted.

How far ahead should I book?

Spring and autumn are popular, so an early quote request means a wider pick of dates.
