Turfing small and terraced gardens

A few square metres of fresh lawn can change how a small garden feels. We turf yards, narrow plots and front gardens as carefully as big lawns.

Small gardens, planned properly

Getting in

In terraced streets, turf often comes in from the back lane through a yard gate. If the house is the only route in, we lay down protection and carry everything through in manageable loads.

Fitting the space

Small lawns are all edges. We cut the turf neatly around paving, steps and planters so the finished shape looks deliberate.

Light and shade

High yard walls and neighbouring houses can limit sun. We'll talk through how much light the lawn gets, and how a slightly longer cut helps grass in partial shade.

Where we often work

  • Tyneside flat yards

Walled yards in Heaton, Jesmond and Byker.

  • Rentals

Freshening a yard or front lawn between tenants.

  • Gravel to grass

Old gravel and membrane out, soil and turf in.

  • Front gardens

Small lawns behind a low wall or railings.

Is my garden too small?

No. A yard with room for a small square of lawn is still worth doing well, and preparing a small area properly doesn't take long. Add rough measurements to the form, or use our lawn calculator.

Questions people ask

Can you work with no back lane access?

Yes. If turf and tools must go through your home, say so on the form and we'll plan for it.

Will a lawn grow in a shady yard?

Turf can do well with a few hours of light a day. In deep, all-day shade it will thin out over time, and we'll be honest with you about that.
